Stop smoking group programme
At the Owen Centre, Lewisham Hospital, every Monday evening for 7 weeks at 6:00 - 7.15pm offering:
- tips and ideas on how to succeed
-
support of other people stopping at the same time
-
a choice of medications for 12 weeks
-
breath tests to check your progress
-
some fun to keep you going
Stopping at the same time as other people can be really effective and many people who have joined one of our groups, recommends it to friends and colleagues.
Sessions 1 and 2 start with information and discuss how to decide the treatment which would suit you best and help you while you stop smoking. This includes nicotine products - patches, gum, nasal spray, lozenges, tabs or inhalators. Or prescription medications - Champix or Zyban.
At the 3rd session everyone stops at the same time and prepares for the first non smoking week. In the next 4 sessions people discuss their progress, giving each other ideas on managing and alternatives to smoking. Experienced advisors give information and encouragement.
The start dates for the group programmes are:
- 1st March
- 19th April
- 7th June
‘Smokefree Nights’
These are monthly follow up ‘smokefree nights’ for anyone who wants to meet up occasionally with others in their group, to celebrate their success or solve any problems that arise. There’s always an advisor or others who’ve been to a group to talk it over with.
Below are the monthly dates for the smokefree nights at the Owen Centre this year:
- 15th Feb
- 15th March
- 12th April
- 10th May
- 7th June
- 5th July
- 2nd Aug
One to one support
If stop smoking groups aren’t for you, you can see a stop smoking advisor one-to-one at a time to suit you, and there are advisors in many GP practices, pharmacies and some weekly evening or daytime drop ins. You can arrange regular sessions for the first few weeks of stopping smoking.
At the first session your advisor will talk about your smoking habits and history and will help you decide what type of treatment you could use to help you while you stop smoking.
Who are the stop smoking advisors?
There are trained stop smoking advisors in community pharmacies, nurses and health care assistants in GP practices and community advisors running ‘drop in’s in Lewisham.
If you’re more comfortable speaking in another language, we will help you find an advisor who can speak the right language for you or arrange for an interpreter.
‘Drop in’ services
There are drop-ins you can use immediately without an appointment.
