Millwall Football Club

We know getting help and support from the stop smoking service (NHS) means people are 4 times more likely to quit, the challenge is making any health message relevant to them and making them aware that support exists.  If we can increase the number of quitters we will drastically improve the long-term health prospects of this community.

Premature deaths from cardio vascular disease (CVD) are about 20% higher in Lewisham than national average with CVD deaths accounting for 35% of all deaths in Lewisham. Evelyn and New Cross are target wards because these are two of the most deprived wards in the country.

For MillwallFC this is a real opportunity to reach all elements of the community and increase exposure and support of the club amongst the target routine & manual workers, deprived, black and minority ethnic communities.

Background

It is important that we deliver positive messages of support and empathy. We do not intend to preach or tell people what they can or cannot do. The services provided are information based. There are stop smoking advisors that can offer advice, nicotine replacement therapy and support if someone wants help to quit smoking.

There are also health trainers that can educate people about CVD and its risk factors including: age, gender, blood pressure, obesity, smoking, alcohol & drug problems, high cholesterol levels, diabetes and family history of illness.

Media & Communications

The Healthy Communities Collaborative roadshows happen regularly (twice a month) throughout Evelyn and New Cross. These health checks (MOTs) will include testing blood pressure, cholesterol and carbon monoxide levels.
